Good-bye, Liam

I just read that the last Clancy Brother, Liam Clancy, has died. I was raised on the music of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and I still love them today.

Here are the Lyrics:

Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.

Come over the hills, my bonnie Irish lass
Come over the hills to your darling
You choose the rose, love, and I'll make the vow
And I'll be your true love forever.

'Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the stars they were shining
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she'd be my love forever.

'Tis not for the parting with my sister Kate
'Tis not for the grief of my mother
'Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.

I had not heard about this. They were a ground breakers and kept the music alive when no one was interested.

I agree. They were like no one else, very much like neighborhood street singers when singing a drinking song like Nancy Whiskey, or Jug of Punch, but so tender with the ballads. In fact, Bob Dylan was known to have said that he could not think of a better ballad singer than Liam Clancy.
